Aida is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi in 4 acts staged outdoors in the ancient Roman amphitheater Arena di Verona.
The amphitheater was built around 30 AD. for gladiator fights, sea battles (naumachia) and circus performances. Since 1913, thanks to the exceptional acoustics of the building, the amphitheater has become a regular venue for opera performances. The building was designed for more than 30,000 spectators, the seats were made according to the Greek custom in the form of marble stairs in 44 tiers.
At 21:00, when the sun hides behind the horizon and the heat subsides, all spectators (max. 15 thousand people) light the given candles and the Music begins...
