Montserrat Monastery is a Benedictine monastery, spiritual symbol and religious center of Catalonia and a center of pilgrimage for Catholics from all over the world.
The monastery, located at an altitude of 725 m above sea level, got its name from the mountainous area of Montserrat (“Cut Mountains”), 50 km northwest of Barcelona, where thousands of bizarre limestone rocks rise in a small space of 10 x 5 km. Human imagination has given individual rocks equally entertaining names: Mummy, Bishop's Belly, Elephant's Trunk, Bernard's Horse.
The first mention of the monastery of Montserrat dates back to 880. In 1025, a Benedictine monastery in the Romanesque style was founded here.
The world-famous music school was founded in the 13th century and is one of the oldest music schools in Europe. The boys' choir takes part in all solemn liturgies. The Benedictine order has served in Montserrat for over a thousand years.
